📋 Regulations & Practical Advice

Plug-in battery in Belgium:
what's allowed and what's required?

Since April 2025, you can plug a plug-in home battery into a regular socket in Belgium — no electrician, no AREI inspection needed. But there are rules. We explain everything for our Marstek Venus E, Growatt NOAH 2000, and NEXA 2000.

📌 The short answer
  • Your battery must be on the Synergrid C10/26 homologation list — our Marstek Venus E, NOAH 2000, and NEXA 2000 are all on it
  • You need a digital meter for correct control via P1 port or CT sensor
  • From 800W combined power, register with Fluvius within 30 days
  • No AREI inspection, no electrician needed for the battery itself
  • Want to feed back to the grid? You'll need a grid feedback contract

What exactly is a plug-in battery??

A plug-in battery — also called a plug-in home battery or plug-and-play battery — is a compact battery that you plug directly into a regular socket. No electrician, no breaking walls, no complicated installation. During the day, it charges with your solar surplus; in the evening, you return that stored electricity to your home.

The capacity of our models ranges between 2 and 5.12 kWh with a power output of up to 2,500 W. It's important to know: whether a battery counts as plug-and-play doesn't depend on the power output but on whether it's on the official Synergrid list.

📅 Two important dates

April 17, 2025 — Plug-in home batteries officially permitted in Belgium, provided they are homologated via Synergrid C10/26.

October 15, 2025 — From this date, you can control the battery via the P1 port of your digital meter. No more EnFluRi sensor, no more electrician needed. Truly plug-and-play.

5 kWh · 2,500 W · plug-and-play. Homologation pending with Synergrid — coming soon to Belgium.

Tip: Always check the exact model number on the official Synergrid list before purchasing. An earlier version may be approved while a newer one is not yet listed. The list is updated weekly at synergrid.be.

Synergrid C10/26: what does that mean?

Synergrid is the federation of Belgian grid operators (Fluvius, ORES, Sibelga...). They establish the technical regulations for devices connected to the Belgian electricity grid. For plug-in batteries, regulation C10/26 applies.

Synergrid approves the inverter — not the battery cells themselves. The inverter determines how the battery communicates with the grid, manages safety features, and ensures synchronization. Each approved model receives a unique GLV reference number on the list.

ℹ️

Is a model not on the list? Then it cannot legally be connected to the Belgian grid. Never buy a battery without checking this first — even if a webshop sells it with a .be domain.

The 800W limit: what it really means

The 800W limit appears everywhere in articles about plug-in batteries and is almost always misunderstood. Let us clarify.

800W is not a legal power limit for plug-and-play. It is a registration threshold with Fluvius. The Synergrid C10/26 list includes plug-and-play batteries up to 2,500W — such as the Marstek Venus E — which can simply be plugged into a socket, without an electrician and without an AREI inspection.

⚡ What the 800W limit actually means

Under 800W combined power: no registration with Fluvius is mandatory (unless you want grid feedback compensation).

From 800W: register with Fluvius within 30 days via mijn.fluvius.be.

Practical advice: above 800W on a shared power circuit is strongly discouraged. In that case, use a dedicated 16A circuit.

When to register with Fluvius?

1
Digital meter + under 800W

No registration is mandatory. You connect and use it. Do you want grid feedback compensation? Then register via mijn.fluvius.be.

2
Digital meter + 800W or more

Register within 30 days via mijn.fluvius.be. The Marstek Venus E is rated at 2,500W — registration is therefore mandatory unless you limit it to 800W in the app.

3
Analog meter

Always register, regardless of power. Fluvius will visit within 90 days for a digital meter. Correct control via P1 port is only possible afterwards.

4
Existing solar panels

Are you already covered by a grid feedback contract? Then you register the battery with Fluvius as an addition to your existing installation, especially if the combined power exceeds 800W.

P1 port or CT sensor: which do you choose?

Our batteries can measure consumption in your home in two ways to enable smart charging and discharging:

✓ Simplest

P1 port (SMR)

Connect the included Smart Meter Reader to the P1 port of your digital meter. No electrician needed. Only works with DSMR 5.0 smart meters.

✓ Most accurate

CT sensor (Shelly Pro 3EM)

CT clamps in the meter cabinet measure per phase. Requires a certified electrician for installation. Ideal for three-phase homes or if you don't have a smart meter.

⚠️

Note for older smart meters (DSMR 4.0 or lower): these only transmit data every 10 seconds. The Marstek Venus E requires DSMR 5.0 for optimal operation (1 update per second). With an older meter, the Shelly Pro 3EM serves as a reliable alternative.

Do you need a grid feedback contract?

A plug-in battery can, in principle, feed electricity back into the grid. Fluvius therefore requires you to have a grid feedback contract with your energy supplier. In practice, this happens automatically: with most suppliers (Engie, Luminus, TotalEnergies, Bolt...) this is activated as soon as Fluvius processes your registration.

Realistically, your battery will feed back very little — our systems are configured for maximum self-consumption via the anti-grid feedback function. The contract is therefore more of a formality than a significant earning opportunity.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an electrician for the Marstek Venus E?
Not for the connection of the battery itself — it's a plug-and-play installation on a grounded socket. For the installation of the CT sensor in the meter cabinet, a certified electrician is required. Alternatively, you can use the P1 port via the included Smart Meter Reader, which does not require opening the meter cabinet.
Can I use the Marstek Venus E at 2,500W without an electrician?
Yes. The battery is Synergrid C10/26-homologated and can be connected to a grounded socket. At 2,500W, it is highly recommended to use a dedicated 16A power circuit. Registration with Fluvius is mandatory within 30 days if the combined power is 800W or more.
What if I already have solar panels on the roof?
No problem. Our batteries operate completely independently of your existing PV system. Via the CT sensor or P1 port, the battery monitors the total energy consumption and the production of your solar panels, and automatically optimizes self-consumption — regardless of the brand or type of your existing panels.
Does the battery also work in Wallonia or Brussels?
Yes. Synergrid C10/26 is federal and applies to all of Belgium. Registration is not done via Fluvius but via your regional grid operator: ORES, RESA, AIEG, AIESH, or REW in Wallonia, and Sibelga in Brussels.
Can I take my battery with me if I move?
Absolutely — that's one of the great advantages of a plug-and-play battery. Unplug it, take it with you. At your new address, you simply plug it back in. Don't forget to re-register with Fluvius at your new address if the power is 800W or more.
When will the Growatt Aura 5000 be available in Belgium?
The homologation procedure at Synergrid is ongoing. As soon as the Aura 5000 is officially certified, we will inform all interested customers. You can subscribe to our newsletter to be among the first to know.
